Sensible Choices

If someone were to ask me how I lost weight, I don’t think I could provide a very simple answer. It wasn’t one answer, or even a very straight line the younger me to now older (wiser) me. Chronologically, here are some things I’ve tried:

  • Portion control

  • Weight loss challenges at work (with zero strategy)

  • Just more fitness (using P90X training DVDs)

  • Read the Atkins book and did nothing

  • Read a low-carb experiment chapter in a book…and did nothing

  • Eat more, drink more, work more plan. No surprise here - this did not help.

  • Ask a professional metabolic physician for help. Curiously, this doctor type was not covered by my health insurance, so I paid cash. Best money I’ve ever spent. Cohesive, science-based plan following blood work. Quantifiable results - leading to changes in behavior and a better understanding of how I work internally.

  • Layer in intermittent fasting with metabolic plan

  • Refinement towards carnivore diet

  • Removal of alcohol and an even cleaner pantry (especially related to carbs and added sugars.

  • Increased consumption of nutritional information, from a variety of sources, including my general physician, and make small adjustments.

  • Continue to simplify approach that makes eating a non-event, but more of a refueling task.

The list above covers a pretty large span of time - from 1994 to today. I have time most mornings to browse around YouTube for new content, mostly from a list of folks that I subscribe to. Dr. Becky Gillaspy is one source I’ve followed for awhile. Her approach is a low-key calm, information focused style that almost always makes sense or reinforces repeatable behavior. And in this short video, she also promises to make the ad inserts shorter! Free YouTube requires that content creators hustle, I get it. 650,000 subscribers - wow. I assume she is crushing it. The video below is from this morning and caught my eye mostly for the title of Intermittent Carnivore, which is a pretty accurate descriptor for what I do.
